Caserta and Capua

Land of work

Built by Luigi Vanvitelli from 1751 on behalf of Charles III of Bourbon, the imposing Palace is one of the most sumptuous palaces in Europe, whose decoration was worked by the most important workers of the time. The guided tour starts with a visit to the representative apartments, the private rooms and the Palatine chapel. Continue in the Park, which with the magnificent waterfalls and the English Garden can compete, for scenery and variety of plants, with the famous parks of Versailles and Schonbrunn. The visit continues towards Santa Maria Capua Vetere which mainly presents elements closely linked to archaeology, thanks to the presence of remains ranging from the Etruscan to the early Christian age. We find the Campano Amphitheatre, second in size only to the Colosseum of Rome, for which it probably acted as a model. The gladiator ludi and venationes are relived in the Gladiator Museum, where it is possible to understand the most important aspects and customs of the life of the ancient Romans. Not far from the Mithraean, one of the most interesting monuments of the cult of the Persian god Mithras.
