The jewels of Cilento

Caves of Pertosa and Charterhouse of Padula

The day starts in the Alburni Mountains, where the Pertosa Caves are located: a complex of karst cavities that extends for a length of about 3000 meters in the underground of the municipalities of Auletta and Polla del Vallo di Diano. In the first section the caves are crossed by the Negro River, an subterranean river navigable with a small boat, while the whole path is illuminated by a scenic system of lights that makes it unique, suggestive and fascinating the journey guided and told by an expert speleological guide.
The guided tour continues to discover the Certosa di San Lorenzo, also known as Certosa di Padula, the largest in Italy, located in the Vallo di Diano in the province of Salerno and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. It was founded by Tommaso Sanseverino Count of Marsico in 1306. The main part of the Charterhouse is in baroque style. The monastery has the largest cloister in the world and is surrounded by 84 columns. A large spiral staircase, in white marble, leads to the library which has the floor covered with ceramic tiles of Vietri sul Mare. In the great kitchen, legend has it that an omelette of a thousand eggs was prepared for Charles V. Today, the Charterhouse houses the provincial archaeological museum of Western Lucania, which collects finds from the excavations of the necropolis of Sala Consilina and Padula.
