This guided tour of the Phlegraean Fields is designed to offer students a comprehensive educational experience, combining history, archaeology, and nature in one memorable day. With our expert guide, students will immerse themselves in the past and experience firsthand the cultural and natural richness of this extraordinary region.
The day begins with the arrival at the Phlegraean Fields, where students will be greeted by our expert guide for a fascinating exploration of this ancient volcanic area. Our first stop is the Aragonese Castle of Baia, home to the Museum of the Phlegraean Fields. This majestic castle offers breathtaking views of the Gulf of Naples and hosts extraordinary archaeological collections that tell the story of the ancient city of Baia. Students will discover the artifacts from the Sacellum of the Augustales and the Nymphaeum of Punta Epitaffio, recreated within the museum to provide a detailed view of the life and cults of the Roman colony of Misenum. Continuing the visit, students will have the opportunity to explore the submerged city of Baia through a unique experience aboard a glass-bottom boat. Comfortably seated, they will admire the villas, polychrome mosaics, and archaeological remains submerged due to bradyseism, a natural phenomenon that caused part of the city to sink below sea level.
After this exciting underwater exploration, there will be a lunch break. Students can enjoy a packed lunch near the park or, upon request, book a meal at a local restaurant to savor typical dishes of Campanian cuisine.
In the afternoon, our guided tour continues to the Archaeological Park of Cuma, the oldest Greek colony in the Gulf of Naples. Here, students can walk through the Acropolis, admiring the Cave of the Sibyl, the imposing artificial gallery from the Greco-Roman era. The guide will illustrate the verses of the great poet Virgil, leading us through the Temple of Apollo to the Temple of Jupiter, located at the top of the acropolis, from where one can enjoy a scenic nature trail.
The day continues with a walk towards Lake Avernus, a place rich in historical and natural charm. This lake, occupying the crater of a volcano formed about 4,000 years ago, is surrounded by cultivated lands and a lush reed bed. The guide will recount the many legends associated with this place and its transformations over the centuries.
Finally, the visit concludes at Lake Fusaro, known for the picturesque Casina Vanvitelliana, a charming royal site from the Bourbon era. Students will have the opportunity to explore this splendid example of historical architecture set in a unique natural landscape.
