Baia, the real Atlantis

The submerged city

The ancient city of the Roman otium can be visited again through the discovery of the collections kept in the majestic Aragonese castle, which houses the Museo dei Campi Flegrei and the archaeological remains, which today are located below sea level due to bradyseism. Inside the museum were recreated the environments of two important monuments no longer visible in situ due to the lowering of the ground due to the phenomenon of bradyseism: the Sacello of the Augustals and the Nymphaeum of Punta Epitaffio. The visit to the remains of the Sacello helps us to understand the life and cults of the Roman colony of Misenum, while the evocative setting of the Nymphaeum introduces us into the world of Roman sculpture inspired by Hellenistic models. We continue the guided tour of the submerged city of Baia, thanks to a boat with a transparent bottom that allows passengers to navigate and observe, comfortably seated, the villas, polychrome mosaics and submerged finds at a depth of about 7 meters below sea level.
