Salerno and Amalfi

Looking for the Longobards

Beginning of the guided tour with a visit to the Castle of Arechi, a Lombard fortification traditionally associated with the Duke Arechi II. We continue to the historic centre of Salerno and in particular, we  visit the Cathedral. Built for the will of Roberto the Guiscardo in Romanesque style, was modified several times, with Baroque additions. Very interesting is the bell tower, which with its 8 bells, of different ages and sizes, is an important testimony of the Arabic style, while inside the church, the ambos recall the Byzantine style. Transfer to Amalfi, one of the ancient maritime republics. We will visit the characteristic historical centre and the Duomo. The latter, dedicated to Saint Andrew, was erected in the ninth century, when the Maritime Republic of Amalfi began to assert itself as power. Characteristic and of great impact, the long staircase that leads to the structure and the spectacular facade decorated with intertwined arches and a mosaic full of colors.
