Naples in Bourbon period

Capital of the Kingdom

During the guided tour we will go to the discovery of the monumental center of Naples enclosed between Piazza Municipio, the political center of the city, and Piazza Plebiscito, the ancient square of the palace.

Nearby we find the Real Teatro San Carlo, the opera house of Naples, the oldest opera house in Europe and one of the most famous and prestigious in the world and not far from the Galleria Umberto, dedicated to King Umberto I of Italy, as a tribute and in memory of his generous presence during the cholera epidemic of 1884, which showed the need for a "Rehabilitation" of the city.

The Royal Palace erected during the Aragonese period frames Piazza del Plebiscito together with the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola, which echoes the shapes of the Roman Pantheon. The building with the surprising court theater, the reception rooms and the Palatine Chapel and which today also houses one of the largest libraries in southern Italy, the Vittorio Emanuele III National Library, was first inhabited by the Spanish and Austrian Viceroys, then by the Bourbons and finally by the Savoy, as a geographical and symbolic center of power and historical events in Naples.
