Castelcivita Caves

The door of the Cilento

Guided tour to discover the caves of Castelcivita, one of the largest speleological complexes in southern Italy, located on the bank of the river Calore, in the municipality of Castelcivita, at the gates of the Cilento National Park. They are a complex of karst cavities particularly rich in stalactites and stalagmites with a variety of shapes, which offer an evocative fairy-tale and multifaceted scenery in which tunnels, large spaces and bottlenecks excavated by the millennial action of water erosion. Also known as the caves of Spartacus, for the legend that the famous gladiator took refuge in these caves during his revolt against Rome, the complex has an important importance also from the paleontological point of view, thanks to the findings of fossils and stone tools, which reveal a human presence of the site dating back to about forty thousand years ago.
